Capital Electric awards $1,000 scholarship

As part of its commitment to community and area youth, Capital Electric Cooperative (CEC) awards a $1,000 scholarship every year to a student who demonstrates academic and extracurricular achievement. Funded by Basin Electric Power Cooperative (BEPC), the scholarship is available to children of cooperative members. CEC is proud to announce the recipient of this year’s scholarship, Lauren Fleming.

A graduate of Century High School, Fleming has big ambitions.

"I’m getting my biology degree, because I’d like to go to medical school," says Fleming. "Right now, I’m really interested in the field of oncology."

When she’s not studying, Fleming commands the position of midfielder for the Wayne State Wildcats. It’s the busiest position on the soccer field, and it’s no surprise that’s where you’ll find her.

"Lauren is an outstanding member of the Wayne State College soccer program. She works hard, cares about her teammates and has a competitive attitude," says Head Soccer Coach Joseph Cleary, Wayne State College. "She has faced adversity in her college career and still maintained a great standing both academically and athletically."

Fleming says the sport contributes to her successes both on and off of the field. "Soccer gives me motivation to keep working hard and to keep pushing toward what I’d like to become," says Fleming. "I’ve been really blessed to be able to play soccer. It’s a family, and we keep each other accountable."

Fleming competed against 13 worthy candidates for the scholarship. The judges awarded the scholarship to Fleming due to her outstanding academic achievements. She graduated Century High School with a 4.0 grade point average and earned the honor of serving as a class valedictorian. Currently in her junior year of college, she’s been on the dean’s list every semester. She also serves on the Student Athletic Advisory Committee.

"On behalf of Capital Electric, I would like to congratulate Lauren on her achievements," says General Manager Paul Fitterer. "She is more than deserving of this award, and we are happy to help her work towards her bright future."

The Basin Electric Power Cooperative and Member Cooperative Program is designed to encourage and recognize the achievements of the children of member-cooperative employees and consumers. Each year, the program awards 137 scholarships to children of member-cooperative consumers. CEC is a proud to participate as a member-cooperative. For more information, visit content/scholarship.
