Solar Resources

Interested in generating your own electricity?

Capital Electric Cooperative is here to help members explore, evaluate, and safely connect solar energy systems to our grid.

We are committed to helping our members find safe, reliable, and affordable energy options, including distributed generation like rooftop solar. Before you commit to a project, it is essential to understand the technical, financial, and operational requirements.

Solar Feasibility: Is Solar Right for Your Home?

Installing solar is a significant investment. We encourage you to answer these key questions before signing any contract:

Assessing Your Property

  • Roof Suitability: Does your roof face south or west? Is it heavily shaded? Is the roof structural integrity sufficient to support the weight?
  • System Size: Have you maximized energy efficiency measures first? (It doesn't make sense to purchase more solar than you need!) We can help you reduce your energy use to right-size your array.
  • Ground Mount: If your roof is unsuitable, do you have enough clear, unshaded space for a ground-mounted system?
  • Outage Operation: Important: Without a dedicated battery backup system and a "smart inverter," most residential solar arrays will not provide power to your home during a grid outage for safety reasons.

Financial Readiness

The benefits of solar depend heavily on:

  • How much electricity you currently use.
  • Your local and federal incentives (tax credits, etc.).
  • The total turnkey cost of the installed system.
