On May 1st, 2024, a rate increase will go into effect. The increase will affect two components of
your bill. One is a new rate component that will be labeled “On-Peak Demand”. This component
represents your electrical consumption during the monthly, half-hour peak that Capital Electric
gets billed on by our wholesale provider. For every unit of energy used during that period, you
will be billed $1.25.
While we never know for certain when that half-hour peak will occur, we can make educated
projections. Our plan is to share these projections with you so you will be able to make choices
about how much power you use during those high probability periods. To receive those notifications,
you must have your contact information up to date in our SmartHub application. You can validate the
information 24 hours a day by logging into SmartHub, or you can call our office and we will be
happy to assist.
The second component that will increase is our Grid Capacity Charge. This was originally introduced
last year. It will now increase from $1.25 per kW to $2.00 per kW. As a reminder, this component is
based on your highest need for electricity in the past 12 months.
The Cooperative knows these are trying times for many of our members as cost pressures are being
felt from all sides. We take no joy in adding to that list. If you would like ideas on how to
mitigate this increase, we do have a number of avenues you can pursue. For more information about
mitigation strategies you can visit our website at www.capitalelec.com/opportunities-save, email us
at cec-rates@capitalelec.com, or call our office 701-223-1513. We are committed to working
with you to minimize the effect on your energy costs.
